Sewell construction sites amongst best in UK
Construction companies Sewell Construction and I&G have been recognised for being industry leaders at the National Site Awards this month.
The two companies, who are both part of the wider Sewell Group, picked up a bronze award, three silver awards, and three top gold awards for their construction sites around Yorkshire.
The National Site Awards are part of the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme, recognising exceptional sites, organisations and individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the Code of Considerate Practice.
The code focuses on three key areas: respecting the community, caring for the environment, and valuing the workforce. These areas are vital to help raise standards for the construction industry as a whole, and build trust with the public.
I&G’s construction of the high-profile Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds won a bronze award. The build was praised for the site team’s great working relationship with hospital staff, and engagement events to allow NHS staff and MND patients to see the project in progress.
Sewell Construction’s projects to create a new facility for construction apprentices at Hull College, upgraded SEND facilities at Ganton School in Hull, and the Cheney Accelerator Laboratories at the University of Leeds were awarded silver.
The Hull College project was commended for demonstrating to construction trainees and tutors how a site should look, the Ganton project was rewarded for its high regard for training and apprenticeships and the attention given to mental health support for the workforce, and the Cheney Laboratory scheme was recognised for hosting site tours for local T-Level students to who are interested in pursuing a career in construction, showing them how modern technology is enabling designs to be visualised on a site.
Gold awards went to the project to create more SEND provision at Boulevard School in Hull, the construction of a new teaching facility, The Design Centre, at York St John University and an extension at St Oswald’s Primary School in York.
The Considerate Constructors’ team said the Boulevard team’s “commitment to local employment, training and local education organisations, and thus supporting the local economy, is exemplary, and for which the contractor is to be congratulated.”
York St John’s The Design Centre site team demonstrated “high levels of enthusiasm in seeking out opportunities for continuous improvement and in minimising the impact of their works on the University, its staff and students.”
Those working on the St Oswald’s Primary School site were celebrated for having “a real interest and care in its workforce’s welfare and in clearly going the extra mile to ensure the workforce feels engaged and rewarded.”
