Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust upgrade

Repeat clients Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust needed a contractor who could provide a well needed upgrade to facilities that had not been upgraded in over 20 years.
They approached I&G to complete a programme of remodelling and refurbishment works to four Cardiac Catheter Lab Suites at Leeds General Infirmary. This forms part of a 3-year programme which also includes upgrading the mechanical and electrical infrastructure serving the labs.
The purpose of the step-down units is to provide a home away from home, and if anyone knows how to create this, it’s I&G. After winning the scheme by competitive tender, that’s exactly what we did.
The solution
The project involved the redevelopment of the existing mechanical & electrical infrastructure serving the labs, in order to bring them up to the current HTM / BGN compliant standards.
The challenges
The working area was located near several live theatres, leading to some minor complications and delays. However, we pulled together to work out of hours to ensure patients and staff were left undisturbed.
Some works were carried out during the pandemic and given the tight timescales this brought about a need to plan works effectively to ensure that social distancing could be achieved.
The result
All together three laboratories have been remodelled and refurbished as part of the programme, with the fourth starting soon, and potential for two more.
The finished Labs are a huge improvement on the previous ones which were over 20 years old and will enable the clinical team to provide an enhanced service to patients in an environment that is fit for 21st century healthcare.
The improved labs have made way for more modern, specialist equipment to allow the hospital to enhance patient care.
The Cardiac Catheter project has faced some challenges regarding a tight programme, however these obstacles have been addressed and overcome through strong communication and collaboration!
