Helping everyone access healthcare
CLIENT: BEVAN | TYPE OF WORK: REFURBISHMENT | DATE: 2025 | SECTOR: HEALTH
Bevan is an award-winning social enterprise delivering inclusive health and wellbeing services to some of the most marginalised individuals and communities across Yorkshire. They wanted to improve their city centre premises in Leeds, where they provide medical appointments to groups such as asylum seekers, people experiencing homelessness, sex workers and Travellers, all of whom can face social barriers to accessing healthcare. They asked I&G to help.
The solution
Bevan already had use of a three-storey building in Leeds City Centre, which had a mixture of clinical and office space. The building had not been updated for some time, and they wanted to refurbish the space, to make it more suitable for delivering their services.
We refurbished the building over two floors, creating a new welcome area, two waiting areas, seven consultation and clinical rooms, two large counselling rooms and a large open plan office space, plus three separate office and meeting rooms.
Work included a full strip out and putting in new walls, new floors, doors and ceilings, an internal panel system, new reception area, nurse call and panic alarm system, and fire stopping.
"I&G were incredibly respectful of our environment throughout the build, and their flexibility meant we could continue delivering care throughout the development. We’re proud of the result and grateful for the partnership."
The challenges
Location was the major challenge for this project.
The building was in the middle of a very busy city centre, with access for deliveries extremely difficult. Due to the location of the building, there was nowhere a skip could be sited, so all waste had to be collated and taken off-site by van to be recycled.
Within the building itself, there was no lift, so all materials for the top floor had to be manually carried up the stairs.
The building was also open for patients at all times during the project. When refurbishing the ground floor clinical area, we worked on half the space at a time, with the other half still being used for medical appointments. This meant we had to be particularly conscious of dust and noise, avoiding disruption to the staff and patients.
The result
The newly refurbished building has allowed Bevan to evolve their services in line with the changing needs of the people they serve. Their new office space gives them a place that has adapted to their new way of working, and the increased clinical space allows them to deliver more appointments, and therefore help even more vulnerable people get access to the medical help they need.
"This refurbishment has been transformative for our team and the communities we serve. The new clinical spaces are not only more welcoming and functional, but they also allow us to offer more appointments and a greater variety of services. Working in a space that reflects the dignity and care we strive to provide every day has made a real difference to staff morale and patient experience."
