More space for a school

CLIENT: TRINITY ACADEMY   |   TYPE OF WORK: NEW BUILD EXTENSION AND REFURBISHMENT   |   SECTOR: EDUCATION

Trinity Academy Grammar in Sowerby Bridge has aspirations to be the most transformational academy in England. As one of the top 1% of improving schools in the country, the Academy has seen a 96% year-on-year increase in first and second choice applications. With more students wanting to join, the school needed to improve and expand its facilities.

The solution
Trinity Academy came to I&G to create a new build extension and refurbishment of their learning areas and dining room. We created a single-storey extension to house a new dining space and two new classrooms, as well as completing work to improve catering facilities, such as installing new servery counters and a food lift.

Works included:
• Demolition of multiple areas
• Structural steel work
• Groundworks and concrete floors, plus new flooring, carpet and vinyl
• Creating two new classrooms
• New single storey extension
• Installing a new food lift
• New accessible toilet and washing facilities
• New air handling system
• New fire doors
• New servery counters providing hot and cold food
• New electrical feed into the area
• Adding the new extension to the current Building Management System (BMS) system

Challenges

Schools cannot close for months whilst construction is ongoing, so the project had to take place whilst students were on site. This brought about two issues – firstly, the site had to be made safe from curious students, with all staff complying with the school’s DBS requirements, and secondly, the team had to work sensitively so as not to disrupt the activities of the school.

There were also many stakeholders involved in the decision process, from the Academy Trust and the local authority to the school leadership team and facilities management providers. We had to bring the project together, managing all the stakeholders to ensure the scheme progressed without being held up by the complex decision making process.

The results

The school now has more classrooms and bigger dining facilities, meaning the Academy can take on additional pupils. As well as extra space for lessons, the dining room is less congested, meaning pupils have a better experience at school.

The school has since been praised by Ofsted for bringing about “significant and sustained change” at the school, rated as good with outstanding features.
